China quake

A few sites putting up reports, video, etc. from areas hit by the earthquake in China. John Kennedy at GlobalVoices.org will get you there. Thanks to Dan Washburn at Shanhaiist.com, which has a very impressive set of dispatches on the earthquake, for connecting me with his friend, Bo Feng. I talked to Bo Feng over the phone from his place in Chengdu this morning (about 90 km from the epicenter of the earthquake near Wenchuan county), and Bo told me about hiding under his desk with his mother. Listen to Bo here:

Bo told me he was pretty rattled by the experience. But he felt a lot better when he got on his bike, rode around his neighborhood in Chengdu and noticed that people appeared to be very calm, collected and generally un-panicked. Bo said his home phone works. But the mobile phone service is down. Other than that, he said electricity, water and Internet service all fine so far. Tonight, Bo said he plans to sit down and write to his best friends, make sure they’re all ok, and remind them how much he cares about them. Here’s the story I put on the air today:

BBC News video and account from an eyewitness here.

Newsweek’s Melinda Liu has a post on today’s earthquake, and a link to a recent story on seismic events and superstition in Asia.

Some captivating photos here at Sina.com, a Chinese website.

Wikipedia is already on the story too.

More videos and photos here (especially useful if you read Chinese).

Here’s that video from the student at Sichuan University:
